Flora London Marathon - Sunday 26 April 2009 by Michael Finlay

I woke up on the Sunday morning with a cold and was not expecting a pb
due to my own fault on Thursday night.  I traveled to the start about 7:40am where I was meeting john McLaughlin.

We chatted for a bit before the start about our different times and john was not to sure about the heat at this time in the morning when running the marathon. I lined up at the start line but I think I started to far back because on the course I was dodging in and out of people. So back to the start line the gun went and we were off. We were only running for 6minutes then a sudden stop and had to walk don't know what happened there then we were off again.

I was ticking over the miles feeling good and taking on fluid at all water station. When I got to half way I was feeling good so decided to push on a bit  so was ticking over the miles at a quicker pace than at the start.  Was feeling good up until mile 24 were I think I went down hill because I had to walk. I did try and run again bit when I saw a guy walking I used that as an excuse to walk with him. (in the long run a good idea) we got talking then the guy said will we try and run the 2miles which we did then about a mile to go I was feeling ok so I said to him I would push on and thanked him for helping me run the last two miles.

When I got to the bridge that says 385yards to go that was my sign to push on and then I was coming down the home straight and looked at my watch and then was aiming for under 3hrs 30min which I got. when I finished I was ok with my time 3hrs 29min 18sec and a medal to show for it.

I have applied for the Virgin London Marathon next year so hopefully train harder next year and I am aiming for a pb if I get in.  Thanks to all that sponsored me and to john Mclaughlin for training with me on my 22mile run.  Thanks again
