Kilbarchan Athletic Club sent a large number of athletes to the Open Cross Country races at Kilmarnock at the weekend and their efforts were rewarded with some excellent performances.

 

            The Senior Women's race was dominated by Kilbarchan athletes with the lead frequently changing hands over the tough hilly 4 miles course before Leanne Hamilton  broke away to win in 24minutes 11 seconds, 50 metres clear of Natalie Sharp, with Christina Rankin 3rd for a clear team victory.

 

            Under 17 men's team were also overall winners with Thomas McDonald 2nd, Garry Rankin 4th and Craig Haxton 5th and there was another team success in the under 15 boys race with Callum Matthews 2nd, Chris McStay 3rd and Rorie Tracey 9th.

 

            The under 13 boys team looked good for major successes later in the winter by dominating their event. Euan Gillham and Gavin McArdle had a close battle over the 3 miles circuit with Euan just having the edge to win in 10 minutes 54 seconds. And a fine 4th place from Scott McLardie ensured the team win.

 

            The under 13 girls were also team winners with Gwen Gillham 2nd, Caitlin McStay 3rd and Kathryn Lee 7th and good packing by the under 11 girls with Stephanie McStay 5th, Rebecca Craig 6th and Heather Fawcett 8th, won another team title. The under 11 boys were 2nd in there team event with Andrew Maclean 4th, Andrew MacAngus 5th and Robert Mallinder 8th.

 

            The Glasgow University 5mile Road Race was also on at the weekend and it was another team success for the Kilbarchan club with Ross Toole having a fine run for 3rd place and getting good support from Conor McNulty and Tom Hearle, with Tom also winning the award for the top veteran athlete.
