Robert Quinn retained his Scottish Masters Cross Country Championship at Irvine on Sayurday, covering the course in 31 minutes 12 seconds, finishing around 100metres ahead of his closest challenger. Cambuslang Harriers win the team race with Kilbarchan in second place, Robert being supported by Tom Hearle 15th, James Snodgrass 20th and John McMillan 26th. Jim McMillan showed that he is still going strong by winning the over 65 age category in the fine time of 42.46.

 

            The Renfrewshire Road Race Championships at Greenock on Sunday, were dominated by Kilbarchan athletes who won several individual and team titles.

 

            Elspeth Curran won the Women's Renfrewshire title, in 29 minutes 8 seconds with Leanne Hamilton 2nd in 29.47 and with Karen Yule in 7th place, Kilbarchan won the team award. In the Men's race, Derek Hawkins was 2nd in the Championship, time 24.37and supported by Fraser Williams 6th, Scott Hawkins 10, Donald Petrie 21, Nick Emsley 29 and Gordon Gallacher 40, Kilbarchan won a closely contested team competition.

            Callum Hawkins was a clear winner of the under 17 Men's race in 15.24 with Graham Evans 3rd and in the under 15 boys race, Russell Mountford was a close second in 10.24.

 

Kilbarchan girls dominated the under 15 girls rae with a 1-2-3 finish from Jenny Eadie, Elaine Eadie and Emma Haddock and in the under 13 girls, Kirsty Harper was 2nd in the County event with Gwen Gillham 3rd and Kathryn Lee 6th and winning the team race. It was also a team success for the under 13 boys with Euan Gillham, Rorie Tracey and Callum Matthes finishing 2-3-4. The u11 Kilbarchan boys just missed Gold on count back with Scott McLardie 2nd, well supported by David Collins and Euan McKerral but the girls got back on the Gold team trail with Caitlin McStay 2nd and closely supported by Rebecca Craig and Stephanie McStay.

 

The Scottish Schools Indoor Championships were staged at the Kelvin Hall last week and local schools were well represented.

 

            There was a super Gold medal performance by Hazel Ross from Park Mains High School in winning the under 16 girls High Jump title with a clearance of 1.69m. This was a big personal best and also a Kilbarchan club record and also just missed a Championship Best Performance .

 

            Hazel also won Silver in the 60m Hurdles in 9.35 seconds, another PB. Silver medals were also won by Judith McNicol (Gryffe HS) in the over 16 girls 60m Hurdles in 9.50s; David Kerr (Paisley GS) in the under 16 boys 400m in 54.01s; Jack Lochans (Paisley GS) in the u16 boys High Jump, clearing 1.75m; and Gary Stevenson (Park Mains HS) in the o16 boys 60mHurdles, time 8.54s which was also a Kilbarchan club record.

 

            There were also 4 Bronze medal winners. Calum Macleod (St Columbas School) in the u16 boys 800m in 2.19.88; Michelle Bell (Paisley GS) in the over 16 girls 800m in 2.20.69; Natalie Sharp (Hutchesons GS), the over 16 girls 1500m n 4.49.6; and Connor Henderson (Gryffe HS) in the over 16 boys 400m, time 52.09 seconds.

            At the 3rd meeting of the Scottish Indoor League on Sunday, Kilbarchan AC won the under 17 men's competition. Andrew Cunningham won the 5kg Shot with a Personal Best of 12.11m and Connor Henderson was 2nd in the 60mHurdles and 400m and 3rd in the 800m while James Quinn was 4th in the 200m. They will be joined in the Scottish Finals in March, by the under 20 women who did enough to qualify with good all round performances by Sally Webster, Emma Pettigrew and Judith McNicol.

 

As well as all the other Indoor and outdoor athletic events taking place in Scotland over the last few days involving Kilbarchan Athletic Club members, the Club also had a group of 12 young athletes competing in Belfast, in the Northern Ireland Junior Indoor Championships and achieving some excellent results.

 

            Hazel Ross who won the Scottish Schools High Jump title last Thursday, won the Irish under 16s title with an outstanding 1.71m clearance, a personal best which would have been a Championship Best Performance at the Scottish Schools event.

 

Hazel was in fact a double winner, taking also the under 17s 60m Hurdles title in 9.21 seconds. In the under 16 age group, there were Silver medals for Jack Lochans in the High Jump clearing 1.70m and for

Frances Campbell in the 60m with a PB of 8.46seconds.

 

            Back on the roads again and Paul Arcari was in terrific form in winning the RAF Kinross to Lossiemouth ½ marathon in the fast time of 66minutes 55 seconds which indicates that his London Marathon preparation is going well.
