Press Releases - Monday 7 December 2009

Kilbarchan Athletic Club had a tremendous day at the West District Cross Country Championships at Irvine last Saturday, winning no fewer than 3 individual and 4 team Gold medals.

First event was for under 13 girls with the Kilbarchan girls hoping for a medal of some sort. And they excelled themselves, led by Gwen Gillham, winning by inches with a last gasp burst to record her first major success. There was great support from Katie Turnbull who finished 5th and Caitlin McStay 11th, confirmed victory for the team.

A great day for the Gillham family was confirmed when twin brother Euan won the under 13 boys race after a close battle with team mate Gavin McArdle, the two boys dominating the race from the start. Another fine run from Scott McLardie who finished 6th, ensured an emphatic team success.

The success story continued in the under 15 girls race with another super performance.  Kate Gillies had her best race so far for a great 2nd place and her team mates were also in top form with Jenny Eadie 3rd and Kirsty Harper 4th for an outstanding team win.

Under 15 boys, disappointingly, didn’t finish a team, thought there were good runs from Russell Mountford 7th, closely followed by Callum Matthews 8th. Under 17 men finished 4th in the team event with Graham Evans best performer in 13th place and in the under 17 women's race, Elaine Eadie was 11th.

The Senior Women's team was badly affected by late withdrawals and yet came so close to winning the team title, just losing out by 2 points. International triathlete Kerry Lang led the way in 7th place, followed by Cara Sloss 8th, Christina Rankin 12th and Karen Glendinning 29th to earn team Silver medals.

Shettleston Harriers won the Mens 10K race, led by their Eritrean contingent but there was a fine run form Derek Hawkins who ran strongly to finish in an excellent 3rd place. 43 year old Robert Quinn showed that he is still a class act, finishing 10th, winning the Veterans (over 40s) Gold award and leading Kilbarchan to the veterans team title with support from James Snodgrass and Donald Petrie.
