Press Releases - Monday 30 November 2009

Liverpool was the venue last weekend for the second race in the McCains Challenge winter cross country series and the event was of major importance, including  the UK trials for the European Cross Country Championships to be staged in Dublin on 13th December where there would be events for under 20, under 23 and Senior athletes, male and female.

Athletes came from all over the UK and  Kilbarchan Athletic Club had a large contingent with one or two having the chance of a top six place which should ensure GB selection for Dublin.

Callum Hawkins was the big hope and the Elderslie youngster, just having moved up from under 17s to the under 20 age group, ran a terrific race to finish 4th in  19 minutes 47 seconds, just 8 seconds behind the winner, and virtually guaranteeing selection for Dublin. Older brother Derek, also had a fine run, finishing 8th in the under 23 age group but maybe just not enough to gain selection.

There were other good performances and in the associated younger age group races, the Kilbarchan under 13 boys were again in great form. Euan Gillham finished 5th in 10.46, Gavin McArdle was 10th in 10.58 and Scott McLardie 23rd in 11.24 to be the top team in the event which attracted top runners from all over Britain.

This coming Saturday, the West District Cross Country Championships are being staged at Irvine with the Kilbarchan club optimistic about their medal chances.
