Shettleston Harriers retained the George Cummings Trophy when they won the Bell Group UK sponsored 4x2.7 miles road relay round the village of Houston last Saturday. Host club Kilbarchan Athletic Club, finished second with Ron Hill Cambuslang Harriers in third place.
The Shettleston team has been considerably strengthened by three Eritrean athletes who came to Scotland for the World Cross Country Championships last January and decided to settle in this country. The quartet covered the 4 lap course in the course record time of 50 minutes 25 seconds, well clear of the young Kilbarchan quartet which included Callum Hawkins, Derek Hawkins, Conor McNulty and Paul Leck and whose average age is barely 19 years. They had the consolation of winning the Renfrewshire County Road Relay Championship which is staged in conjunction with the big event. The County events relate to the old county boundaries which include East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and parts of south west Glasgow.
The Kilbarchan B team of Ross Toole, Robert Quinn, Andrew McAlpine and Calum Morrison, finished 5th overall and also were second team in the county Championship.
The Shettleston Eritrean T Woldemichael ran the fastest lap, 12 minutes 26 seconds, with Derek Hawkins 13.05, the fastest Kilbarchan runner just ahead of young brother Callum’s 13.09.
In the Womens race, Victoria Park City of Glasgow, retained the Trust Inn Trophy with a time for the 3 lap race of 45.56 . The Kilbarchan trio of Natalie Sharp, Elspeth Curran and Leanne Hamilton, repeated last year’s 2nd place and like the men, they also won the County Relay Championship. The Kilbarchan trio was 47.00 with Elspeth the 4th fastest overall, time 15.12. Fastest was 14.38 by Sara Stevenson (Giffnock North), The Kilbarchan B team of Karen Yule, Lynsey Curran and Cara Sloss were 5th overall and third in the County Championships.
