| The sport of athletics kept going over the Christmas period with Boxing Day particularly busy for Kilbarchan athletes.
At the Indoor meeting at the Kelvin Hall, young Derek Colquhoun, 2nd in the British under 13s High Jump rankings last year, made a great start to the winter season with a superb clearance of 1.72m. His mentor David Watson leapt a useful 14.11m Triple Jump and Andy Dawkins produced a fine 15.19m effort in the Men's Shot.
The Kilbarchan winter series of races continued on Boxing Day with the popular Christmas Relay run round the paths of Kilbarchan Park and surrounding streets. Fastest for the 2 lap course of 1.6 miles was Ross Toole with a time of 7 minutes 45 seconds, with Robert Quinn just 3 seconds slower with a club over 40s record of 7.48. Third fastest was Paul Leck at 8.06. Fastest lady was Claire Gibson who beat her own club record with a fine run timed at 8 50 and Louise Manson set a club veteran women's record, time of 9.41. For the one lap course, there were some good times by the youngsters including, Euan Gillham u13 boy 4.50, Scott McLardie u11 boy 5.06, Gwen Gillham u13 girl 5.06.
The winning relay team, was the Dream Team of Andrew McAngus. Jamie Hewitt, Euan Wighton, Elaine Eadie, David McCormack and Paul Leck, with a time of 49 minutes 16 seconds for the 10 lap race.
Elsewhere on Boxing Day, Elspeth Curran was first lady in the Inverclyde 3 mile race in the good time of 16 minutes 36 seconds.
The tough Marshall Moor race on the Sunday after Christmas attracted a good turnout on a beautiful frosty day and veteran Donald Petrie was determined to hold on to his title and in the end, he did so quite comfortably after an early challenge from John Kynaston, Donald’s time 46 minutes 34 seconds. The race goes from Kilbarchan park to the trig point on Marshall Moor and back to the Park. Just around 7 miles but very rough terrain. John held on to second place with Jim Ogilvie 3rd, just ahead of Chris McGlennon. Louise Manson was first lady in a club woman's record of 56.14 with Christina Rankin 2nd in 58.54.
