| Kilbarchan Athletic Club won the Bell UK sponsored George Cummings Trophy Road Relay Race in Houston last Saturday, for the 4th time in the 31 year old history of the event. George Cummings whose brother David, became an Olympic medallist and was also a founder member of Kilbarchan Athletic Club, was born in Houston but sadly, was killed in the first World War. David presented this Trophy to the club, in his brother’s name.
The race involves 4 laps of 2.7 miles around Houston and on the first lap, Callum Hawkins established a lead of over 80 metres over Shettleston Harriers. Conor McNulty on the second lap, worked well to protect that lead and Derek Hawkins, on the 3rd lap, ran the fastest lap of the day, 12 minutes 43 seconds to extend the lead to over 400 metres. On the final lap, Scott Hawkins was never going to be caught and he brought Kilbarchan home for a fine victory. Shettleston Harriers finished second and there was a fine run from the Kilbarchan B team to grab 3rd place ahead of Inverclyde AC. The B team consisted of Paul Leck, Andrew McAlpine, Chris Devenney and Nicky Moore with Paul the fastest, timed at 13.35.
The Kilbarchan Veterans team, won their over 40s category with an outstanding performance which gave them 5th place overall. The team was Tom Hearle, James Snodgrass, Robert Quinn and Donald Petrie, with Robert the fastest with a time of 13.24.
The race also counts as the Renfrewshire AAAs Road Race Championships so Kilbarchan AC were also winners of the County title.
In the Women's 3 lap race, Kilbarchan took the lead by just a second on the first lap but Springburn Harriers were too strong overall and ran out worthy winners. Kilbarchan in 2nd place had the consolation of winning the County relay title with Elspeth Curran on the first lap, having the fastest lap of the day, 15 minutes 12 seconds and Hannah Waugh on the second and Leanne Hamilton on the 3rd stage, working hard to ensure a good overall result.
The club is grateful for the continued sponsorship of the event by the Bell Group UK, which ensures its continuing success.
