| Conor McNulty showed his real quality last Saturday when he retained the Scottish Universities Cross Country Championships in convincing style. The Kilbarchan athlete, who was representing Strathclyde University, has had a quiet winter season so far but at the Heriot Watt cross country event, he was the star performer, covering the tough 10K course in 32 minutes 41 seconds, to finish 200metres ahead of the second placed runner. There were also good runs from Paul Leck and Ross Toole, both also at Strathclyde University, who finished 5th and 7th respectively.
Kilbarchan athletes were out in force at Rouken Glen Park last weekend, competing in the Renfrewshire Cross Country Championships and there were some excellent performances.
Kerry Lang was in top form, a convincing winner of the Women's 4 mile race with a time of 26 minutes 39 seconds. The Commonwealth Games triathlete, led from the start to finish 150metres clear of Kilbarchan club mate Louise Manson who added to her growing reputation with another super run. And there was good back up from team manager Karen Yule who finished 5th to ensure Gold team medals.
In the men's race, Robert Quinn, a triple winner of the Scottish title, gave the current Scottish champion Mark Pollard from Inverclyde, a really hard race, finishing just 4 seconds adrift at the end, times 32.39 and 32.42 for the 10K course. This was a great effort from Robert, who won his last Scottish title nearly 9 years ago, yet is still a major force.
There were no individual or team winners in the younger age groups but still some good performances. Andrew McAlpine ran strongly for 2nd place in the under 17 men's event and Kate Gillies had her best race yet, in winning Silver in the under 15 girls race. In the under 15 boys, Russell Mountford showed improving form to finish third and there was also a third place for Chris McStay in the under 13 boys race while Scott McLardie was a close second in the under 11 boys race..
And congratulations to Jessica Martin who has been awarded the Eddie Campbell.
