| Kilbarchan Athletic Club’s series of races over the festive season got under way last Monday with the 4 mile Christmas handicap run round the streets of Johnstone. The race included two 2.1 mile circuits round Beith Road, Cochranemill Road, Kilbarchan Road and Quarrelton Road and after the first lap, Annette Fitzpatrick looked to be taking advantage of her high handicap and was well clear.
A couple of the younger boys were going well though back marker Callum Hawkins and others looked to have too much to do. With just over ½ mile to go, Annette was being closed down rapidly by Callum Matthews and Nicholas Love and at the line, Callum triumphed by 40 metres with Nicholas a further 80 metres ahead of Annette. Eddie Lyons was a further 300 metres behind in 4th place with Gordon Gray 5th and Andrew Clugston 6th.
Fastest scratch time was 22 minutes 8 seconds by Callum Hawkins, a good personal best but only good enough for 21st on handicap. Second fastest was John McMillan 23.29 followed by Stephen Fleming 23.57. Donald Petrie was fastest veteran, 4th best scratch time of 23.58 and Natalie Sharp was fastest scratch lady, her time of 25.43 being an u20 women's club record.
