Press Releases - Monday 2 March 2009

 

   Linwood was the scene for the annual Renfrewshire Schools Cross Country races which produced some exciting competition and anyone watching, had to be impressed by the enthusiasm of the youngsters involved.

            The Secondary Schools races were in the morning with 10 out of the 11 District schools represented.

           

First race was for S1 girls and last years primary winner Cara Pedley, now representing Gleniffer HS, took the lead after 300meters and eventually won by 80 metres from Erin Campbell (Gryffe HS) with Cara’s twin Marianne in third place.  Gryffe High School won the team race from Gleniffer HS with Castlehead HS. 3rd.

            In the S1 boys race. Callum Matthews (Castlehead HS), led from the early stages and was chased all the way by Gavin McArdle (Gleniffer HS) with Thomas Collins (Gleniffer HS) coming through to finish 3rd.

Gleniffer HS won the team race with Castlehead 2nd and Gryffe 3rd.

           

The S2 girls was a close battle with Cleo Jackson  (Gryffe HS), just getting the better of Laura McEwan (St Andrews) with Abigail Park (Castlehead HS) taking 3rd place. Gryffe HS were first team with Castlehead 2nd and Gleniffer third.

           

Paul Kane (Park Mains HS) led from the start of the S2 Boys race and won by 30 metres from Conor McGregor (St Benedicts HS) with Jack Haggerty (Johnstone HS), 3rd.  Team race was another win for Gleniffer HS with St Andrews 2nd and St Benedicts 3rd.

           

S3 girls race produced the biggest win of the day with Park Mains pupil Kate Gillies winning by a distance and followed home by schoolmates Fiona Bowes and Robyn Lewis to give Park Mains a convincing team victory ahead of Gleniffer HS with Castlehead 3rd.

           

Gleniffer HS had another winner with Russell Mountford winning the S3 boys race with Matt Wild (Gryffe HS) 2nd and Craig Haxton (Castlehead HS) 3rd, Gleniffer HS also won the team race with Gryffe 2nd and Castlehead 3rd.

           

If there was enthusiasm in the morning, the afternoon was incredible with over 30 Primary Schools represented and around 150 competitors in every race, being cheered on by their schoolmates.

           

P6 boys race began proceedings and Scott McLardie (St Peters), led almost from the start and came home the winner with Callum Taylor and Hamish McKinley Yeaman, (both Houston PS), 2nd and 3rd. Houston won the team race with St Peters 2nd and Arkleston 3rd.

           

Robyn Connolly (StCatherines PS) was a good winner of the P6 girls race with Melissa McDonald (Auchenlodment PS ) 2nd and Shona Ross (Wallace PS) 3rd. Houston PS again won the team race with Auchenlodment 2nd and St Peters 3rd.

           

Euan Gillham (Bridge of Weir PS) started the P7 race steadily but soon passed the early leaders to win comfortably with Andrew Irvine (Houston PS) and David Collins (Bushes PS), 2nd and 3rd.  Houston PS won another team victory  with Lochwinnoch 2nd and West 3rd

           

Gwen Gillham (Bridge of Weir PS) emulated her brothers success by winning the P7 girls race in good style with Catherine McLean  (St James’s Renfrew) 2nd and Iona McEntee (Wallace PS) 3rd   Good packing by the West runners gave them the team title with Houston 2nd and Lochwinnoch 3rd.

           

Congratulations to Houston PP who won the Renfrewshire Leisure Primary Schools Trophy..

 

Kilbarchan Athletic Club’s annual Cross Country Championships were staged in Milliken Estate at the weekend, over a tough endurance sapping course ..

           

James Snodgrass retained the Challenge Cup making it 6 in total which equals Nat Hayes pre war 6 wins and is now just one short of Tom Andersons record of 7 victories. Winning time for the 6 mile course was 33 minutes 48 seconds with Michael Finlay 2nd Dave Mewse just holding off fellow veteran Stevie Hards to get 3rd place..

           

In the Ladies race over 4 miles, Karen Glendinning, returning to action after a knee injury, was a good winner in 27.11, ahead of Lesley McKerral.

 

            The Young Athletes races provided some good racing. Jenny Eadie won the under 15 girls race over 2 miles, beating sister Elaine with Vanessa Hogan third and Russell Mountford, 5th in the Scottish Championships last week, won the under 15 boys 3mile race ahead of Craig Haxton.

 

            Kirsty  Harper was a good winner of the under 13 girls race ahead of Gwen Gillham and Chloe Hardie was in third place while Callum Matthews just held off a fast finishing Euan Gillham, to win the under 13 boys race over 2 miles with Chris McStay 3rd. In the under 11 girls race over 1 mile, it was a battle of the McStay sisters with Caitlin winning ahead of Stephanie and  Lauren Aston was 3rd while in the under 11 boys event, Scott McLardie led from the start to win ahead of David Collins with Euan McKerral third.

 

            Club officials are again grateful to Mr and Mrs McIntyre for their permission to have our Championships round the traditional Milliken Estate area and also to farmer Ian Craig for his permission and for getting his tractor to free Karen Glendinning's car from the mud!!!

 

            Elsewhere, the Scottish Universities Indoor Championships were staged at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow and Glasgow University student Cameron Clark had a successful day.

 

Cameron won the Long Jump (6.19m), was 2nd in the Triple Jump (13.70m) and was also 2nd in th 60m

with a Personal best of 7.36s.
