| The first of the winter series of the McCains UK Cross Country Challenge meetings was staged at Gateshead last Saturday. This is a major competition series and attracts top athletes from around the UK and abroad.
All the events were of a high quality and Callum Hawkins, now in the under 20 age category, had a fine run finishing 5th in 26 minutes 36 seconds with Paul Leck also prominent, finishing in 11th place, time 27.31.
The Senior races were also quality and in the Men's 6 mile race, Conor McNulty was 14th (29.28) and Derek Hawkins 23rd (30.01) while in the Senior Women's race Elspeth Curran ran well for 16th place in 30.22.
Also at the weekend, the popular Braids Hill Race was staged in Edinburgh and there was an excellent run for Christina Rankin representing Edinburgh University, to finish 5th, 2nd under 20 athlete, in 19 minutes 12 seconds, with Jessica Martin, competing for Glasgow University 8th in 19.35. Edinburgh University won the team event.
This coming Sunday, the Renfrewshire Cross Country Championships are being staged at Bellahouston Park. The County Championships, take in the historical county of Renfrewshire which includes the current Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Districts as well as parts of south west Glasgow.
