| Competitors in the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships at Irvine last Saturday, had to cope with blustery conditions but local youngsters did well with, at the end of the day, 8 hoping to have booked their places in the Scottish team for the Schools International at Bangor in Wales in 2 weeks time.
Callum Hawkins (Gryffe HS) got back to winning ways with a convincing victory in the over 16s boys race, covering the 6K course in 21 minutes16 seconds and there were excellent performances from Andrew McAlpine (St Columbas School) 5th and Stephen Fleming (St Lukes HS) 7th to earn their International selection.
Natalie Sharp (Hutchesons GS) had a fine run in the over 16s girls race, to claim Bronze medal for 3rd place. In the 14-15 girls age group, Jenny Eadie (Hutchesons GS) had a great run for 5th place and Kate Gilles (Park Mains HS) grabbed 8th while in the 14-15 boys group, Russell Mountford (Gleniffer HS) also gained selection with a good 7th place.
In conjunction with the Schools International at Bangor, there will also be a home International event and with, Derek Hawkins, Paul Leck and Conor McNulty, likely to be selected, there could be 10 Kilbarchan athletes on the trip to Wales.
Elsewhere, the Scottish Indoor League Finals were staged at the Kelvin Hall on Sunday and the Kilbarchan under 17 Men's team just missed victory by one point while the under 20 Women's team finished 4th. Individual event winners were Connor Hendersson the 800m in a PB of 2 minutes 6.3 seconds and Andrew McLaughlan in the Shot with a good effort of 14.04m.
