| Kilbarchan Athletic Club concluded their club Track and Field Championships last week and the 4 evenings provided some excellent competition, despite some awful weather.
Holly Belch retained the Rosebowl for winning the Ladies Track Championship and Holly was also 2nd in the Field Championship behind the winner Sally Webster. The track contest was a close one with Holly winning with 16 points, ahead of Michelle Bell who had 14, and Debbie Henderson 13 Holly also won the 100metres Salver smashing her best with a time of 12.4 seconds. Sally dominated the Throws to win the Field title with 16 points to Holly’s 14 and Judith McNicol was 3rd with 13 points. Sally’s best performance was winning the Hammer with a club under 20s record of 33.84metres.
Stephen Fleming won the Track Shield with a good all round performance which earned 15 points with Jim Ogilvie 2nd and winning the Veterans award as well as being overall winner of the Field Championship. David Watson and Cameron Clark, missed their favourite Triple Jump event and finished 2nd and 3rd in the Field competition and David also retained the Donnie Stewart Memorial Trophy by winning the 100 metres in 11.6 seconds.
Hazel Ross won the under 17 women's Track title ahead of Emma Haddock and Nicole Caulfield and Hazel was also 2nd in the Field competition behind Siobhan McStay, with Melissa McStay 3rd. Outstanding performance was Hazel setting a club under 17s Triple Jump record with a leap of 10.54m. The under 17 men's track competition was close with Craig Haxton winning with 13 points, just ahead of Connor Henderson who scored 12 and David Kerr with 11. Connor Henderson tied for fist place in the Field competition. With 14 points, with Andrew Cunningham and Jack Lochans also scoring 14.
In the under 15 girls competition, Frances Campbell and Kate Gillies tied on 15 points with Kirsty Harper third. Corinne Brooks was a good winner of the Field competition with 15 and Kate Gillies was 2nd and Frances Campbell 3rd. Adrian Mendez-McVeigh dominated the under 15 boys Track and Field, scoring a maximum 16 points in both and Chris McStay was 2nd in the Track and Duncan Webb 2nd in the Field. 3rd Track was Callum Matthews and 3rd Field was Murray Beattie.
Chloe Hardie and Gwen Gillham dominated the under 13 girls events with Chloe winning the Track and finishing 2nd in the Field while Gwen won the Field and was 2nd on the Track. Track 3rd was Caitlin McStay and 3rd Field was Katie Turnbull. Euan Gillham won the under 13 boys Track title with 15 points, just ahead of Gavin McArdle on 14 with Fraser McIntyre 3rd. In a very close Field competition, Fraser McIntyre won with 11points, just 1 point of Stuart Cannell, Allan Sharp and Euan Gillham.
Under 11s competition is combined Track and Field and Kerry MacAngus was a Good winner with 13 points with Stephane McStay and Rebecca Craig joint second, both scoring 10 points. Andrew Maclean won the under 11 boys title with Euan McKerral 2nd.
The final meeting of the National Junior League took place at Derby last Sunday with a number of Kilbarchan athletes representing area teams. Outstanding was Holly Belch who was awarded Female Track Athlete of the Match award for her winning time of 60,55seconds for the 400metres Hurdles which broke the 25 year old Kilbarchan club record. Holly, who was representing Sale Manchester, then went on to finish a good second in the 100m Hurdles in 14.74 seconds. Representing Team Glasgow, Sally Webster was 5th in the Hammer with a 32.84m throw and Sally also gained valuable points with 7th in the Shot and 8th in the Discus while David Kerr set a Personal Best time of 51.46 seconds for 7th place in the 400 metres.
In the B competition and representing Team Glasgow, Connor Henderson was a fine winner of the 400m Hurdles, also setting a Personal Best, 55.6 seconds, Stephen Fleming was 2nd in the 3000m in 9 minutes 21.71seconds and Jack Lochans was 3rd in the 110m Hurdles in 18.67s.
Also last Sunday, at Pitreavie, the local club staged their popular annual Trophy meeting which attracted a few Kilbarchan athletes. Andrew Cunningham had a successful day, competing in the under 17s age group and winning the Shot (12.35m) and was also second in the Discus (36.84m) and third in the Long Jump (5.32m).
Frances Campbell, second in the recent Scottish under 15s 200m, was just beaten by the same girl but had the satisfaction of a good Personal Best with a time of 26.27seconds. Frances was also 2nd in the 100m, close to her best with a time of 12.95 seconds.
Kilbarchan’s young men dominated the Pollok Park 5K race on Saturday, a good sharpener for the imminent winter season. Over a tough hilly circuit, Ross Toole was a good winner in 15 minutes 44seconds with Scott Hawkins 2nd on 16.02, Paul Leck close behind in 3rd pace in 16.08 and Nicky Moore 5th in 16.38.
This coming Sunday (20th), the popular Schools Invitation cross country races will he staged in Kilbarchan Park, first race at 2pm. There are races for P5/6 and P7 boys and girls and also for under 13, under 15, under 17 boys and girls and entries can be either individual or through the schools. Entries accepted on the day, by 1.30pm latest, fee £2 on the day
