Press Releases - Monday 12 October 2009

Kilbarchan Athletic Club teams were prominent in all 4 races of the West District Cross Country Relay Championships at Stepps last Saturday, winning medals in 2 of them.

In the Senior Women's race, the Kilbarchan trio of Cara Sloss, Elspeth Curran and Leanne Hamilton, were a good second behind Springburn Harriers, who had also beaten them at the recent George Cummings Road Relay at Houston. Elspeth Curran had the second fastest time of the day, 13 minutes 55 seconds for the 4K course.

The Kilbarchan men were also very competitive in their race, in the top 3 positions all through the 4 stage race. In the end, the quartet of Robert Quinn, Derek Hawkins, Conor McNulty and Paul Leck, did enough to win Bronze behind the winners Shettleston Harriers and Inverclyde AC.

The girls team, did as well as was expected to finish in 4th place in their 3x2.5K race but were disappointed to just miss out on the medal positions. However there were some positives with 3 under 13s in the top ten finishers on the first lap, led by Gwen Gillham in 4th place with Caitlin McStay and Chloe Hardie just seconds behind. Jenny Eadie and Kate Gillies both ran well but just couldn’t quite get the team amongst the medals.

Though the Kilbarchan boys were disappointed to finish 6th, it was a very competitive race and in the end they were only 100 metres behind the winners Shettleston Harriers. On the first leg for under 13s, like the girls, the boys had three in the top ten with Gavin McArdle just edging out Euan Gillham for 2nd place and Scott McLardie close behind and on the next 2 laps, Russell Mountford and Graham Evans, worked hard to keep in contention, though missing out in the end.

Still, a second, a third, a 4th and a 6th in the District Championship was a solid performance from the local club.

This coming Sunday, the Renfrewshire Cross Country Relays are at Pollok Park.
