| It was another top class performance by Callum Hawkins at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh last Saturday when he won the Scottish Inter District under 17 Cross Country Championship in convincing style. Covering a relatively short course in 12 minutes 6 seconds, Callum beat the best in Scotland and also some Swedish guest runners and now must be favourite for the Scottish Championship at Falkirk next month.
Athletes have to win selection for the Interdistricts which give top class competition and other Kilbarchan athletes performed with great credit.
In the under 13 girls race, Kirsty Harper and Gwen Gillham were 14th and 21st and for the under 15 girls, Kate Gillies and Jenny Eadie were 12th and 15th.
For the boys, Chris McStay and Euan Gillham were 14th and 19th in the under 13 age group and Russell Mountford was 15th for the under 15 boys. Under 17 boys were led home by Callum Hawkins and there were also good runs from Andrew McAlpine 14th, Stephen Fleming 20th and Scott MacAulay 23rd.
The Senior races included the International event with the worlds top athletes from Africa and Europe and elsewhere, taking part. The women's race over 5.6K was won by L Masai from Kenya, with Louise Manson and Natalie Sharp 56th and 57th and gaining great experience from running in such exalted company. In the Men's race, won by A Dinkesa from Ethiopia, again a great experience for Derek Hawkins who finished 40th.
This coming Sunday, the Celtic Nations Cross Country Challenge takes place at Cardiff. Conor McNulty and Derek Hawkins have been selected for the under 23 men's team and Elspeth Curran for the under 23 Women's team while Callum Hawkins moves up an age group having been selected for the under 20 Men's team. Also this weekend, events include the Scottish Closed Indoor Championships at the Kelvin Hall
