Press Releases - Monday 1 December 2008

The McCains Challenge winter series of Cross Country races, attracts the best in Britain and provides top quality competition for the athletes.

The second of the series was staged at Liverpool on Saturday with a number of Scottish athletes, including several Kilbarchan harriers, travelling to take part.

Star performance came from 16 year old Callum Hawkins who proved to be in a class by himself in the under 17 men's race. Conditions on the day were cold and foggy and there was quality competition for Callum. However after 4K, Callum gradually accelerated away for a convincing victory in a time of 17 minutes 17 seconds for the 5.5K course and 80 metres ahead of his nearest rivals.

20 year old Conor McNulty, who won the Scottish Universities title the previous week, continued his good form in the Senior race over 9.8km, which was the qualifier for the UK team for the European Cross Country Championships which take place in Belgium on 14th December. Conor was 29th overall in 30.57, 2nd Scot and counted 7th in the under 23s age category, which, with 6 places available, means that he might just miss selection for the Junior team for Belgium.

Derek Hawkins had a good run in the under 20s race, representing a Scottish select and finishing 11th, 3rd Scot, time of 21.08 for the 6.7K distance.

This coming weekend, The West District Cross Country Championships are being staged at Irvine Moor, first race 12noon and Kilbarchan athletes hoping for success in the chase for medals.
