Claire Gibson from Johnstone, who recently was awarded her first GB vest, won her first UK title at the weekend when she won the 1500metres at Sheffield last Sunday, The meeting was also the Trials for the World Indoor Championships in Turkey next month and although her time of 4 minutes 17.38 seconds was a personal best and a Kilbarchan club record, it is just short of the qualifying time for Turkey and Claire hopes to achieve this target in the next 2-3 weeks.

 

There were some fine results by local young athletes at the Scottish Secondary Schools Indoor Championships at the Kelvin Hall last week, including 2 Scottish Schools Champions . Sarah Glenny, who attends Clydeview Academy had to work through a heats, then  a semifinal, to win the over 16s 300m, finishing strongly, time 41.85s. Gavin McArdle, Gleniffer HS, competing in the under 16s 1500m, won his heat comfortably and in the final , led from the start for a convincing victory, time  4.15.58. There was a deserved Silver medal for Caitlin Stewart, Park Mains HS, competing in the under 16s 300m, time 43.61s, with a slightly faster 43.42s in her semifinal. Bronze medals were won by Sarah Dempsey, Gleniffer HS,in the under16s 800m, time 2.26.18; and by  Erin Gilchrist, High School  of Glasgow, under16 Shot .. 8.96m.

 

Veteran athletes were also competing in the Scottish Indoor Championships at the weekend and medals as well as Kilbarchan club records were achieved by Lindsay Scott in the over 70s competition, Bronze in 9.80s and by Tony McManus over 75s 50m Silver in 11.85s while Tony also got Silver in the 200m in 43.91s.

 

At the National Indoor Relays at the same venue, The Kilbarchan men's team of James Quinn, Nishant Puri, Conor Henderson, Tony Daffurn, won Bronze in a club record time of 1 minute 32.91s

 

.A busy week of Indoor Athletics was completed with a group of Kilbarchan athletes, travelling to Belfast to compete in the Irish Indoor Championships. Keir Carmichael won the under 15s Long Jump with a 5.05m clearance, Victoria Cleer was runner up in the under 16 girls 60m Hurdles, time and Caitlin Stewart was 3rd in the under 17s 200m in 27.83seconds.

 

Also at the weekend, there was an outstanding run by Callum Hawkins, Butler University, in the USA at the Husky Classic meeting .. Competing in the 5000metres, Callum's time was 14.03.37 .. less than 3seconds outside the long time Kilbarchan club held by Robert Quinn.. Also top of the GB under 23s rankings at this early stage of the season.
