| It was a busy weekend for local athletes with a variety of top competitions around Scotland.
The Scottish National Senior Indoor Track and Field Championships and Junior Relays were staged at the Kelvin Hall on Saturday with some Kilbarchan winners and new club records.
Alison Rodger again broke the 16metre barrier, winning the Shot with a super 16.00m effort, just 5cm short of her Scottish record, while David Watson won the Triple Jump, also setting a Kilbarchan club record with a fine effort measured at 15.20m. Cameron Clark was 2nd in the Triple Jump with 13.68m.
Kilbarchan teams set new club records in both boys and girls under 17s 4x200m Relays. The boys quartet of Adrian Mendez McVeigh, Andrew Cunningham, James Quinn and Ross McGill were 3rd in the final after setting a club record of 1 minute 36.06 seconds in the heat. The girls quartet of Hazel Ross, Kate Gillies, Frances Campbell and Sarah Glenny set a club record of 1 minute 49.43 seconds in the final, unfortunately just losing 3rd place by inches.
The British Universities Cross Country Championships at Stirling, attracted a top class entry and there was a super run from Glasgow University student Derek Hawkins to take 6th place, top Scot, his time of 35 minutes 19 seconds just 8 seconds behind 3rd place.. In the Womens race, Elspeth Curran, also Glasgow University, was also the top Scot, finishing 11th in 23 minutes 39 seconds.
At Forres. James Snodgrass was top local athlete at the Scottish Veteran Harriers Cross Country Championships, finishing 14th in 35 minutes 25 seconds,
The big local event was the Renfrewshire AAAs Road Race Chanpionships which were staged at Greenock’s Battery Park, the competition including the historical county areas of Inverclyde, East Renfrewshire and parts of south west Glasgow.
Young Callum Hawkins was again in scintillating form in the 5mile Senior race, winning by 60 metres in 24 minutes 23 seconds, beating quality opposition in the form of Inverclyde’s Mark Pollard. Kilbarchan, disappointingly were 4th in the team event behind winners Bellahouston Road Runners.
In the under 17 events, Garry Rankin was a good winner of the boys race in 16.22 and Elaine Eadie was 3rd in the girls race. Russell Mountford had to work hard to win the under 15 boys race and good support from Callum Matthews 3rd and Chris McStay 4th, won the team award for the Kilbarchan club. Kirsty Harper just missed out in the under 15 girls race, finishing just 10 metres behind in 2nd place. The Gillham twins were in top form in the under 13s race, Gwen won in 11.52 and had great support from Caitlin McStay 3rd and Kathryn Lee 5th to win the top team award. Euan won the under 13 boys race by a distance with Scott McLardie going well for 4th place and Charlie Wighton 7th resulting in Kilbarchan getting 2nd team place just behind Inverclyde AC. In the under 11 girls race, the Kilbarchan girls packed well with Robyn Connolly 3rd, Rebecca Craig 4th and Stephanie McStay 5th to win the team award ahead of Giffnock North and the under 11 boys were also 2nd team, this time behind Inverclyde AC, with Ross Findlay 3rd, backed up by Andrew Maclean 6th and Andrew MacAngus 8th.
