An outstanding run by Callum Hawkins, competing against the best in Britain, to win the u17s race at the McCains UK Challenge Cross Country meeting at Liverpool on Saturday 29 November 2008.

The UK Challenge races attract the best in the UK and Callum not only won, but by 80 metres or more,

in a time 17 minutes 17 seconds.

The Senior race was the qualifier for the European XC Champs and a fine run by Conor McNulty, 28th overall, 2nd Scot, 7th in the u23 sub category and might just miss out in European selelction.

NOTICE REGARDING Nigel Barge 10k Memorial Road Race

This is one of the oldest annually run races in the UK, having been run every year since 1943. It was organised by Kenneth Barge, a former member of the Maryhill Harriers committee, in memory of his son, Nigel, who died at Dunkirk. Nigel was an outstanding officer who had trained as a Royal Engineer, before helping to prepare and map defenses at Dunkirk. He was also a trained pilot and a keen athlete. This race is run in association with Scottish Athletics.

The race will take place at 2pm on the 3rd January 2009 with registration, parking, changing and refreshments at Garscube Sports Complex, Maryhill Road, Glasgow.

Please note the NEW VENUE - in the past the race has started from the Garscube estate, but changing has been elsewhere - this year it will all be in the one place!

Some additions to the web site

I have added a link to show our child protection policy and also reintroduced the regular press releases that Arthur Smith writes each week.  I have put on this weeks and will be backdating the last couple of months in due course.

To accommodate this I have added a column to the links at the top.  Not all pages will have the new list but I'll try and change those in due course.  In the meantime you will need to access the new pages from the home page.

Congratulations to Jessica Martin (Kilbarchan AAC) who has been awarded the Eddie Campbell Memorial Medal for 2008. Details taken from the Scottish Athletics Web Site ...

The single medal is awarded annually to an under-20 athlete who has shown excellence combined with sportsmanship in hill races and is subsequently selected from a short list by the Scottish Athletics Hill Running Commission, in accordance with set guidelines.

In addition to demonstrating commitment to hill running over a number of years, Martin has had a brilliant 2008 which has included Scottish national honours in the World Mountain Running Trophy and Great Britain and Northern Ireland representative honours in the European Mountain Running Championships.

Earlier this year she placed first in the junior women's race in the Knockdhu International in Northern Ireland, followed by an impressive 13th - top placed Scottish athlete and third counter for the bronze medal winning Great Britain and Northern Ireland junior women's team - in the 7th European Mountain Running Championships in Germany.

At the World Mountain Running Trophy in Switzerland in September, Martin once again finished top Scot in 13th place overall - the final time Scotland will compete in the event which from 2009 will include a Great Britain team in a new Championship-status competition.

Most recently, Martin was part of the Scotland team that won the Junior Home International in Edinburgh.

THE ROAD TO SAFETY

by Derek Parker

(Coaching Adviser - Kilbarchan AAC)

Sadly, although the winter training has just begun, we have already had a number of accidents involving some of the club's runners - including ankle sprains and, regrettably, the sustaining of facial injuries, requiring on at least one occasion, hospital treatment.

Running is an enjoyable activity but athletes of all levels and at all times must remember that so many of our roads and pavements are full of potholes, raised slabs, loose stones and other obstacles.

We must always be vigilant. As well as pavements in poor condition, there are invariably bits of wood, broken fences, strands of barbed wire, low branches - some with thorns which can cause severe eye injuries - protruding from walls, fences and hedgerows.

Add to these the propensity of people to step out of closes, shops. parked cars, round corners etc and the potential for accidents is quite high. So keep in the middle of the pavement as far as possible to avoid collisions. Avoid running too close to walls, sides of buildings and kerbs where a trips or stumbles could see you end up in the middle of the road.

AT ALL TIMES, LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD AND KEEP YOUR EYES FIRMLY FIXED ON THE PAVEMENT OR ROAD AHEAD OF YOU. DO NOT TURN YOUR HEAD OR FACE SIDEWAYS TO SUSTAIN A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR TRAINING PARTNER(S). THIS INVARIABLY INVITES DISASTER.

It is also advisable to carry a mobile phone to summon assistance if necessary. If any member of a running group sees an obstacle, he or she should inform all other members of that group of the impediment. It is amazing how many runners will swerve to avoid a lamppost, fence, bollard etc without warning those behind them of the same obstacle.

Please report all dangerous surfaces and situations to myself, John, Arthur or Robert Hawkins so we can warn athletes in advance of the dangers.

Running is a wonderful and enjoyable sport - but each and everyone of us must play our part to ensure it is a safe activity for all members of the club. Thank You.

Report from Arthur Smith

The Alan Scally Road Relay race last Saturday 1 November 2008, also counted as the Scottish Universities Relay Championships and Kilbarchan athletes contributed significantly to the overall as well as to the University results.

Shettleston Harriers, with their Eritrean contingent, won the Men’s race, 4x4.7miles,  with Strathclyde University second and winning the University Championship, the team including 3 Kilbarchan runners, Ross Toole, Paul Leck and Conor McNulty. Second University and 3rd overall was Edinburgh ahead of Glasgow University who had Derek Hawkins on the first leg and who ran the fastest time of the day by a Kilbarchan athlete, 23minutes 27 seconds which was also the fastest time by a University athlete.

The Universities dominated the Women’s 3 lap race filling the first 4 places, with Edinburgh first ahead of Glasgow, who had Elspeth Curran on the first leg. Glasgow B team which included Jessica Martin, finished 3rd and Edinburgh B team were 4th, team including Christina Rankin. Also competing was Eilidh Menzies, on the comeback trail after various long term injuries and illness.

First actual club team to finish, was Kilbarchan . Despite so many girls competing for strong University teams, the trio of Louise Manson, Lorraine Gribben and Lynsey Curran did a fine job to finish 5th

Special evening at Run 4 It from Scott Partyka .....

I am contacting you because I would like to offer a special invite for Kilbarchan to join us at our dedicated Club evening on Wednesday 29 October from 6.30pm.

With so many members of Kilbarchan working with Run 4 It, it would be non-sense to not establish a working relationship between us.

The idea behind this event is to offer Kilbarchan's running club members advice & support. The runners can benefit from not only 15% OFF everything at Run 4 It, but also the features we have arranged for the evening;

  • FREE Video Gait Analysis by Saucony

  • The chance to speak with a GORE Running Wear specialist

  • Injury & nutrition advice from The Body matrix

  • High Viz clothing tests for safe winter running

  • Junior High Viz clothing

  • Free prize draw on the night

What I really want to achieve is for the members to join us on the night, take advantage of the offers and get the most out of their running in the next few months, knowing that if they need any help whatsoever then they can come to us at Run4it and get a great service. This is the main reason I wanted to contact you directly, to ensure that the members are informed of what Run 4 It are trying to give the running community.

If you are able to attend, then could I ask you to push the evening to your members, and also give me an idea of anticipated attendance so I can ensure we are sufficiently prepared for numbers on the night.

I would like to visit you on your next training night, just to introduce Run 4 It, show our commitment to getting out and helping the running community, and get an idea of possible attendance.

As a token of my appreciation for your help in passing this message on, I would like to offer you a 25% discount on the evening or at a time that best suits you. Unfortunately this would not apply to sale product, but can be used on any of the current range.

Until then, feel free to contact me if you have any queries,

Yours in running,

Scott Partyka
