News this week...

News from the past week or so ...

Hayley Haining continued her return to the International arena last Sunday, running in the Edinburgh Marathon. In very warm conditions, the Kilbarchan athlete was first Brit, time 2 hours 45 minutes 17 seconds, which is good progress towards her longer term target of making the Scottish team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

Note ... Hayley is interviewed in this week's (episode 125  Wednesday 30th May 2012) edition of Marathon Talk Podcast

    Kilbarchan Athletic Club also had a busload  of athletes in Edinburgh last Sunday. for the 2nd meeting of the Scottish Young Athletes League, where they finished in 4th place and with one meeting to go, look set to qualify for the Scottish Final, later in the summer.

    Top performances included a double win for Victoria Cleer, the 75m Hurdles in 12.16seconds, and the High Jump clearing 1.48metres.. Other winners included Laura Stark who smashed her best to win the under 15 girls 800m in 2.21.85, Euan Triut in the under15 boys 800m in  2.08.89 and Gavin McArdle, who won the under 17 boys 800m, just outside the 2 minute barrier but still a PB at.2.00.50 seconds. Callum Matthews, in his first steeplechase, won the 1500m event, time 4.48.66. In the Field events, Ewan Johnstone won the under 15 boys Discus, throw measured at 27.33m.

    Kilbarchan club athletes of the match awards went to Gavin McArdle for his 800m win and to Rona Tytler, second in a top class under 13s 1200m race, time 3.58.3, barely a second outside the club record.

Congratulations to Hayley Haining who was third/first Scot at the Edinburgh Marathon in 2 hours 45 minutes 17 seconds;

and to Gemma Rankin who was second/first Scot at the Edinburgh Half-Marathon in 76 minutes 55 seconds

(just three seconds outside her pb);

and to Catherine Stewart who was first lady/fourth overall at the Island of Tiree 10K

(which included 2000 metres of sand running) in 43 minutes 44 seconds;

and to all club athletes who took part in the Edinburgh Marathon/Half-Marathon.

Claire Gibson wants to add the Scottish 1500m title to a couple of highlights in 2012.

The Kilbarchan AAC captain made her Great Britain debut at the age of 29 back in January when she ran in the Kelvin Hall as Mo Farah graced the last international athletics event in the old Glasgow arena.

Gibson then won the British indoor 1500m in Sheffield on a day when she only just missed the qualifying time for the World Indoors in Turkey.

Now she could line up against young pretender Laura Muir (Dundee Hawkhill) next weekend at 1500m in what could be one of the highlights of the Scottish National Senior Championships. 'I have already had a 1500m best this year and I am looking towards the 1500m a bit more - including at Scotstoun,' said Claire.

‘My experience as a 1500m runner is still quite low even though I am slightly older. I raced 800s right up until last year. I maybe did one 1500 per season.

'I did a full indoors at 1500, four races I think, and I am going to say 1500s right up to the Olympic trials. You never say never but we have European Championships this year as well and that's at the back of your mind.

'It is before the Olympics and the GB team will be selected before the Olympic trials in Birmingham. There is no actual trial event, it will be based on times.

Gibson flew all the way to Japan last month for a high-class 800m race but it turned into a very tough couple of days as she suffered from food poisoning.

‘I am warming up and I knew I felt terrible but I was thinking ‘Maybe I'll be okay’. It's only two laps but as soon as the gun went I really was struggling from the off. I had travelled all the way to Japan and I was thinking ''I can't come here and not even race, this is why I am here.''

‘It was maybe a bit foolish and it took me a little while to recover from that as well. The flights, the time difference and the stomach upset on top of it as well.’

‘It was IAAF meet and they tend to cater quite well for western athletes, so they have stuff that suits you. It was just poor timing. I can't trace it back to the actual thing I ate. I don't know what it was.’

In the men’s high jump, there’s an exciting competition looming with Scotland’s three best men – Ray Bobrownicki (Victoria Park-Glasgow), Dave Smith (Giffnock North) and Allan Smith (Edinburgh AC) – set to be involved.

*The scottishathletics National Senior Championships are at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday 2 June and Sunday 3 June. The action starts at 1pm on Saturday and 12.30pm on Sunday.

Entry for kids is free and adults are £3.

THANK YOU!!!!  THANK YOU!!!!     THANK YOU!!!!    THANK YOU!!!!

Where do I start!  Thank you to the Cunninghams for all their guidance, knowledge and encouragement - the coaches for providing me with

their athletes - to the vets and seniors who gave up their day even though they have jobs and families etc - to all the athletes who competed, not only in their comfort zone, but also in events they don't usually compete in/have never done before - to the younger athletes whose enthusiasm is positively infectious - to our small army of officials, without their commitment we could not have competed - to the parents for allowing your kids to take part and being the 'taxi driver' and also those roped in to doing 'little jobs' on the day - a big thank you to each and every one of you - and finally - and not forgetting .........

My hero - MAX McFARLANE for stepping up to the vets 3000m

and showing us ALL what being an 'active club member' and a 'team player' is really about!

David Cummings 7mile Handicap Race

Video of the race by John Kynaston ...

Taken from Scottish Athletics web site .....

Kilbarchan athlete Euan Gillham proved he was the best in Britain at the Money Giving Mini Marathon in London. The young Scot won the Under-15s race through the streets of the English capital by a six-second margin in terrific style. It means Gillham has followed in the footsteps of none other than Mo Farah and Steph Twell as previous winners of Mini Marathon titles in past years.

Euan’s superb run, aided by Josh Kerr, Jonathan Glen and Robert Bough, helped Scotland to silver medals in the team race in the Boys Under-15s. Kerr (Edinburgh AC) finished fifth, Glen (Inverclyde AC) in seventh while Bough (Edinburgh AC) was 22nd. That was a terrific effort by the four counters, backed up by Aidan Thompson (Pitreavie) and Fraser Glass (Victoria Park-Glasgow), in the overall team race.

Neil Gourley was another young Scot who impressed as he claimed the bronze medal in the three-mile race for Boys Under-17s. The Giffnock North athlete sought to keep in touch with the leaders throughout with Max Aitchison the next best Scot at 15th place.

In the Girls Under-17s our best athlete was Oonagh Dunnett (Edinburgh AC) who was 18th while Catriona Graves (Garscube Harriers) was the highest in the Girls Under-15s at 19th place. All these placings overall from combined regional and 'borough challenge' race.
