Report from Arthur Smith ....

40 runners turned out for the traditional Relay at Kilbarchan Park and were drawn in 7 teams, each team running 10 laps round the 0.8 mile circuit starting at the park fountain, to the far park gate, down New St, Barn Green and back up Well Road. All ages and abilities took part and it was difficult to forecast the winner until the last 2-3 laps. With 2 laps to go, Katherine Wilkie for team 7, took over from Robert Quinn and set off  with a good lead  but realising that some other teams had their fast runners going last and would be closing. Stephen Fleming put team 3 in 2nd spot and Jim Ogilvie put team 2 in a good position, finishing 3rd and handing over to Fraser Williams who now looked the favourite to cross the finishing line in first place. All the last team runners were doing 2 laps and with a lap to go, Katherine was still in the lead but Fraser was closing all the time and further back, Andrew Gibson was rapidly moving his team through the field.

In the end, Fraser was first to finish, with Andrew catching Katherine just in the last 80metres. Winning team, John’s Jaguars, was John Kynaston, Jenny Eadie, Gregor Wylie, Kieran Hards, Jim Ogilvie and Fraser Williams, time 49.55. Second team was Andrew’s Aces, including Andrew Gibson, Russell Mountford, Kim Urie, Evan Williams, Donald Kennedy and Iain Chisholm .and 3rd were Bobby’s Dazzlers Katherine Wilkie, Amanda Herron, Stevie Hards, Fiona McIntyre and Robert Quinn.

Top times were Andrew Gibson 7.59 and Robert Quinn 8.02 while for the Ladies, top 800m specialist Claire Gibson smashed the club Ladies record with a time of 8.59

Report from Arthur Smith ....

11 runners set off from Kilbarchan Park for the annual race to the Marshall Moor Trig point and back, a distance of over 7 miles and covering some very rough terrain. Although this is a scratch race, runners set off at intervals with Christine Scarles and Ann Hannigan starting first, followed by Max McFarlane, then Gardner Masson, Then at 10 minutes, a big group including Stevie Hards, Andrw Clugston, Jim Ogilvie, Dave Mewse, Michael Finlay and John Kynaston, with Donald Petrie last off, a further 5 minutes behind.

There is no set route for this race and experience and know how of the terrain counts for a lot with Dave Mewse and Donald Petrie showing their expertise to come to the fore, while the likes of John Kynaston and Jim Ogilvie had problems with their sense of direction.

Dave was first to finish but Donald the overall winner in a time of 46.17, a Vets 50 record, Dave second in a Vets 55 record of 49.55 and Michael Finlay 3rd in 51.51. Christine Scarles and Ann Hannigan finished in 91.43, both delighted to having made the journey.

Report from Arthur Smith ...

Kilbarchan Athletic Club’s series of festive season races got off to a good start with 50 runners taking part in the Christmas handicap chase round the streets of Johnstone, covering a distance of 4.2 miles.

The race consists of two laps starting on the Beith Road and going via Cochranmill Road, Kilbarchan Road, Quarrelton Road and back along the Beith Road to the start and finish point and at the end of the first lap, young Ainsley Hards, one of the first starters, was still well ahead though another youngster, Nicholas Love was closing gradually, as was Elaine Eadie.  Further back, a big pack of runners, including Robert Allison and Cara Sloss were going well as was last year’s winner Graham Evans. Towards the rear of the field, the back markers including Fraser Williams and Tom Hearle were chasing hard but had a lot to do.

With so many runners and so much happening, few of the spectators noticed 14 year old Calum Macleod working his way through the field until he emerged in the lead with 600m to go and came home a clear winner, with Nicholas Love 100m behind in second place and another youngster, Andrew Campbell 3rd, just ahead of Robert Allison. Ainsley Hards held on for 5th place, leading a group of girls including Cara Sloss 6th, Elaine Eadie 7th while the top ten was completed by Jim Ogilvie, John McMillan and Tony Carroll

Fastest Scratch run was by Tom Hearle, whose time of 21.30, could only get him 22nd place on handicap. 2nd fastest was Fraser Williams at 23.05, then John McMillan 23.13 and Donald Petrie 24.00 while notable for the youngsters, under 15 boys  Graham Evans and Calum Macleod were 7th and 8th overall, timed at 25.24 and 25.28. For the Ladies, fastest scratch was Cara Sloss 26.04, then Jessica Martin 26.56, then Christina Rankin 28.15, while also notable was 13 year Elaine Eadie at 28.41.

Report by Arthur Smith ...

Weather conditions were horrendous at Irvine last Saturday with rain and a biting cold wind making it tough going for the runners. Despite a disappointing performance from the Men's team, who finished just out of the medals in 4th place, there were some other very encouraging performances and team medals in every other category. And for the men there was consolation with the evergreen Robert Quinn having a superb run to finish in 4th place and picking up the top Veterans award.

The Senior women, despite the last minute withdrawal of Kerry Lang who was one of the race favourites, still put in a great team effort to take the Bronze medals, with Elspeth Curran 8th, Leanne Hamilton 11th and Christina Rankin 14th. There was also great backup from Karen Glendinning 26th, Dennise Smith 28th, Lynsey Curran 37th, Kate O’Brien 55th, Nicole Treacy 59th and Wanda Phillips 65th.

In the younger age groups, pride of place goes to Natalie Sharp who won her first District Cross Country title in leading home the under 17 women's race. With Jessica Martin 5th and Michelle Bell 14th, the Kilbarchan just missed team Gold by one point. Also finishing was Debbie Henderson 18th. The under 17 men's team won the club’s only gold team title with Callum Hawkins having a fine run to finish 2nd, well supported by Stephen Fleming 6th and Nick Emsley 9th  while Andrew McAlpine was 12th to finish and Blair Crawford 24th.

Under 15 girls were not expected to win anything so it was a pleasant surprise for them to win team Silver with Elaine Eadie 11th, Sorcha Lynch 17th and Emma Haddock 30th. Also finishing were Ainsley Hards 42nd and Fiona Bowes 46th.  Under 15 boys were expected to be in the mix for the team awards and they finished in third place with Graham Evans 11th, Calum Macleod 14th and David Claes 16th and there was also Thomas McDonald 21st, Andrew Quinn 34th and Craig Haxton 48th.

Vanessa Hogan ran strongly in the under 13 girls race and finished a close second to pick up the Silver medal and also lead her team to second place with Kate Gillies 6th and Jenny Eadie 19th, while Laura McEwan was 44th. Russell Mountford was another individual medal winner, finishing in Bronze medal position in the under 13 boys race and the team also won Bronze with supporting runners Andrew Mitchell 25th and Andrew Campbell 31st and also finishing were Matt Wild 41st, Ross Heggie 55th and Josh Penman 56th.

Elsewhere, 2 local athletes, both pupils at Gryffe High School, represented the Scottish Schools at the International Pentathlon competition at the Kelvin Hall.

Lucinda Logan competed in the under 18 girls competition, scoring 2856 points which included a good 1.59M High Jump, helping the Scottish team to finish 4th.

Connor Henderson scored 2554 points in the under 16 boys competition, particularly noteworthy for winning the 800m in 2.09.99 seconds which helped the Scottish team to finish in 2nd place.

Report by Arthur Smith ...

Kilbarchan Athletic Club made a good start to the Indoor League Competition at the Kelvin Hall last Sunday, winning two of the age category competitions as well as having a number of individual winners and other top performances.

There was a convincing victory in the under 20 Women's competition with Holly Belch having a triple success. Holly won the 60m in a club record time of 8.19 seconds and then went on to win the 60m Hurdles, 9.26 sec and the 400m in a speedy 60.5 seconds. There were also wins for Emma Pettigrew in the High Jump and Rachael Mathieson in the Shot, to ensure victory for the under 20 girls.

The under 20 men were also winners, though much narrower this time. Cameron Clark set an u20s Indoor Record for the Long Jump with a fine 6.33m effort and Stuart Miller won the 400m in 53.6 seconds.

The under 17 women got off to a good start, finishing 2nd in their competition. There were wins for Judith McNicol in the 60m Hurdles (9.68s), Emily McQuade in the High Jump (1.40m) and Sally Webster in the Shot (7.87m). The under 17 men kept themselves in the hunt by finishing 3rd on the day, with wins for Stephen Fleming in the 800m (2.05) and Jamie Milton in the Shot (9.93m) while Jamie also broke the club u17 record for the 60m Hurdles with a time of 9.03s.

Jack Lochans set a Personal best when winning the under 15s High Jump with a fine 1.63m clearance and for the under 15 girls, Hazel Ross won the 60m Hurdles and also set a club age group record with a time of 8.45 seconds for the 60m flat. Other individual winners included Nicholas Love who won the under 13 boys 800m and Mhari Rundell who won the under 11 girls 60m race while Katie McKinlay was joint winner of the under 13 girls Long Jump, measured at 4.15m.

Saturday 1 December 2007 - Scottish Universities Cross Country Championships at Heriot Watt University Riccarton Campus

Conor McNulty put the previous weeks incident at Liverpool behind him, when at Riccarton, Edinburgh, representing Strathclyde University, he won The Scottish Universities title in convincing style, time of 30 minutes 25 seconds for the 6mile trail. Kilbarchan club mate and fellow Strathclyde student Ross Toole, who is more of a 1500m track specialist, showed fine form over the country to finish in 3rd place in 30 minutes 51 seconds.

McNulty won a fascinating men's race, finally breaking Scott Fraser's (Edinburgh) spirited challenge with around a kilometre to go. Ross Toole (Strathclyde) came in third, ahead of a tight team battle.

It was nip and tuck throughout for the Edinburgh (Fraser, Michael Gillespie, Kris Gauson, Duncan Coombs) and Strathclyde (McNulty, Toole, David Phee, Darren Steel) teams, with both Universities packing their first three runners into the top seven finishers. But Coombs, Edinburgh's fourth man, proved stronger than his Strathclyde rival to close the Edinburgh team with a six-point victory margin. Napier University (Dan Mulhare, Zac Boukelia, Ales Drahokoupil, Myles Edwards) grabbed the bronze medals.

Report by Arthur Smith ...

More locally, Kilbarchan Athletic Club had individual and team successes at the Renfrewshire County Championships last weekend, staged at Ardgowan House, Inverkip.

Leanne Hamilton added to her growing reputation by winning the Ladies race over a difficult 4mile trail, finishing 180metres ahead of Claire Thomson (Bellahouston Road Runners) in a time of 25 minutes 35 seconds. Kilbarchan jus missed out on the team title, scoring the same as Giffnock North, 16 points, but losing on count back. Still, it was a good effort with Karen Yule and Lynsey Curran both showing improved form to finish 6th and 9th respectively.

The Men won their Team title, with a super run by 18 year old Paul Leck in 2nd place in 32.55, closely supported by 20 year old Fraser Williams in 3rd place. The experienced club runners provided the back up needed with 6 to count in the team event and the nest 4 counters were John McMillan 9th, Donald Petrie 12th, Michael Finlay 15th and Stevie Hards 18th.

In the absence of a number of athletes down at Liverpool for the UK Cross Challenge event, new recruit Nick Emsley represented the club in the under 17 men's race and showed a lot of promise to finish 2nd, time of  16.01 for the 3mile course. Similarly in the under 15 boys race, there was a fine run from Jack Lochans to finish second and there was also an excellent 2nd place for Matt Wild in the under 13s race.

The Club also had girls at Liverpool but there was a good effort from Michelle Bell to finish second in 20.02 and there was gutsy support from Samantha Kelly 4th and Amanda Herron 6th, to win the team title. There was another second place in the under 15 girls, with Sorcha Lynch finishing 2nd but in the under 13 girls race, Kilbarchan had another winner with Kate Gillies crossing the line in 13.06. With Robyn Lewis 7th and Cara Butler 8th, Kilbarchan were a close second in the team contest.

First event of the afternoon, the under 11s girls race over 1 mile, proved a fine start for the Kilbarchan club with Chloe Hardie a convincing winner in 6.31 and club mate Gwen Gillham a good second. Mhairi Rundell in 8th place ensured another Gold in the team event.

In the Junior Men's race, Conor McNulty finished a disappointing 14th after being right up with the leaders in the early stages of the race. Report of results from weekend of 3-4 November 2007 -

Report by Arthur Smith ..

Round 14 of the BG Triathlon World Cup series was staged in the beautiful Mexican resort of Cancun last Sunday and among the elite 41 competitors was local star Kerry Lang, whose ambition is to make the British team for the Beijing Olympics next year.

Kerry, who is improving with every outing, had her best ever result, finishing in 8th place in 2 hours 4 minutes 42 seconds and this fine result was a real bonus for Kerry after missing most of the summer due to knee surgery.

Because of the training demands of the three disciplines, swimming, cycling and running, to help her preparation, Kerry has reduced her work commitments as an Ear Nose and Throat Consultant.

Her running has significantly improved in recent times and in fact this coming weekend at Gateshead, she will compete as part of a Scottish representative team at the International Cross Country meeting. Kerry is a prominent member of Kilbarchan Athletic Club and recently part of the team that won the West District Cross Country Relay Championships and was second in the National Cross Country Relays at Cumbernauld where she ran the second fastest individual time of the day.

Elsewhere at the weekend, Paul Arcari won the Templeton Woods 10mile Road Race at Dundee in 53 minutes 23 seconds and Conor McNulty and Ross Toole were in the Strathclyde Team that won the Scottish Universities Road Relay Championships at Baillieston, with Conor having the fastest lap of the day, timed at 23 minutes 42 seconds for the 4.7mile circuit.

Report by Arthur Smith ..

It was a super performance by the Kilbarchan boys at Cumbernauld on Sunday. Only 4th at the recent West Championships, this was an exceptional effort to win and retain the National title they won last year and for the 3rd time in 4 years. On the first leg of 2.5K, Russell Mountford had a terrific run, finishing in 4th place, just 10 seconds behind the leader. Connor Henderson put in a quality performance gradually closing on the leaders and just edging into the lead at the changeover. There never looked to be any doubt about the final result as Callum Hawkins sped away over the hilly circuit and came home 80 metres clear for a great victory.

The Kilbarchan Ladies team, recent winners of the West and Renfrewshire titles, knew the opposition was going to be formidable. Changing the running order, Elspeth Curran went on the first leg over 4K and put the team in contention by finishing in 4th place. Cara Sloss worked hard to keep the position and the team was still in medal contention in 4th place, 40 seconds behind the leaders. Kerry Lang hadn’t trained all week due to knee and ankle niggles but maybe the rest did her good as she set off at a furious pace to chase the leaders. She quickly caught the Springburn girl and passed Giffnock North with 1200metres to go. Still closing on the Central girl but just not getting there and only 4 seconds behind at the end. A great effort from the girls and Kerry had the second fastest time of the day, earning selection for the Scottish team for the Gateshead Cross Country meeting in 2 weeks time.

The Men’s team of Derek Hawkins, Paul Arcari, Scott Hawkins and Conor McNulty were never able to get close enough to be serious challengers being in 4th place for most of the race but too much for Conor to do on the last leg. However, there was some consolation for the Men with the Veterans team winning Silver. The quartet of James Snodgrass, Tom Hearle, John McMillan and Robert Quinn were main contenders along with Cambuslang and Edinburgh AC, with Cambuslang the eventual winners.

The girls team, second in the West Championships put in a good effort but could, never get quite close enough, Vanessa Hogan finished 5th on the first leg, Elaine Eadie finished 8th and Natalie Sharp brought the team up to 7th and remarkably, only 29 seconds behind the winning Edinburgh AC team.

The club had a big squad at Cumbernauld, altogether 60 runners  and several other teams.

Girls other teams finished 13th, 39th and 54th, Boys also had teams finishing 11th, 34th 47th.

Ladies B team were 19th and Men also had teams finishing 15th, 57th and 94th.

Top ten times in the various races were achieved by ..

Vanessa Hogan 5th and Kate Gillies 8th u13 girl

Natalie Sharp 6th and Jessica Martin 7th u17 girls.

Russell Mountford 4th u13 boy,

Connor Henderson 4th and Graham Evans 10th u15 boys,

Callum Hawkins 6th u17.

Kerry Lang and Elspeth 2nd and 10th in Ladies race.

Conor McNulty 6th in the Mens race

Report by Arthur Smith ....

Kilbarchan Harriers dominated the Renfrewshire Cross Country relay Championships in Pollok Park last Sunday, winning 6 of the 10 titles at stake. The Men's team of Fraser Williams, Derek Hawkins, Robert Quinn and Conor McNulty, won the men's 4x4K race, regaining the Marshall Trophy which they last won 3 years ago. As a bonus, their B team of Grant Higgins, Chris Devenney, John McMillan and Stephen McGoldrick finished in second place ahead of Inverclyde with the C team of  Donald Petrie, Steven Hards, Dave Mewse and Andrew Clugston in 8th place and the D team of Ian Chisholm, Robert Allison, Jim McMillan and Jim Ogilvie 16th. Fastest lap was by Conor McNulty, 12 minutes 6 seconds.

The Kilbarchan Ladies, winners of the West District title the previous weekend at Irvine, duly won the County title, the trio of  Kerry Lang, Cara Sloss and Elspeth Curran finishing 200metres ahead of Bellahouston Road Runners with the Kilbarchan B team of Christina Rankin, Karen Glendinning and Lynsey Curran putting in a fine effort to finish in 3rd place.  The club also had a C team and good efforts from Karen Yule, Wanda Phillips and Nicole Treacy resulted in 6th place.

In the under 17 age group races over 3x3.2K, the Kilbarchan boys team of Stephen Fleming, Callum Hawkins and Stuart Miller, were convincing winners while the girls trio of Debbie Henderson, Samantha Kelly and Michelle Bell, just lost out by 30 metres to Inverclyde AC.

Kilbarchan dominated the under 15 races over 3x2.5K, winning both. The boys team of Thomas McDonald, Graham Evans and Callum Henderson, led from the start and stretched away to win by a distance with their own B team of David Claes, Jack Lochans and Simon Urie in second place. The Girls team comprising Sorcha Lynch, Elaine Eadie and Sarah Ogilvie always had the edge over the Inverclyde trio with the inexperienced Kilbarchan B team of Ainsley Hards, Jenny Frew and Emma Haddock, running well to finish 3rd.

The Kilbarchan girls also won the under 13s 3x2.5K race. Jenny Eadie gave the team an early lead and Vanessa Hogan, fastest at the previous weeks West relays, stretched the gap. This closed towards the end of the race but Cara Butler provided a good sprint finish to ensure another Kilbarchan victory.  The under 13 boys team of Paul Brown, Adam Butler and Andrew Campbell finished 2nd in their race and the boys under 11 team of Alan Sharp, Euan Gillham and Gregor Wylie won bronze in their 3x1500m event. while the under 11 girls trio of Gwen Gillham, Abigail Reilly andRachel McGinn, just missed the medals, finishing 4th.

This weekend (Saturday 27 October 2007), the National Cross Country Relays are being staged at Cumbernauld and Kilbarchan Athletic Club will have a big squad of runners taking part with hopes of some medal successes.

Saturday 13 October 2007 - West District Cross Country Relays

Report by Arthur Smith ....

Kilbarchan Athletic Club Ladies were in top form at the West District Cross Country Relay Championships at Irvine Beach Park, winning the District title they last won 4 years ago.

Favourites Victoria Park Glasgow were never really in contention  and it became a battle between Kilbarchan and Springburn Harriers. International triathlete Kerry Lang gave the club the best possible start, running the fastest time of the day 13 minutes 49 seconds and handing over a lead of around 120 metres. Leanne Hamilton had to work hard to protect that lead and it was still just over 100metres when Elspeth Curran took over for the last 4000m stint. The 21 second gap closing ominously, 18 seconds became 15, then 13, down to 10 with still 1500metres to go. However urged on by her supporters, Elspeth put on a big push and suddenly the gap began to open again as Lesley Chisholm,  the chasing Springburn runner began to falter and Elspeth raced on to give the team a memorable victory. It was also encouraging that the Kilbarchan B team of Cara Sloss, Christina Rankin and Lynsey Curran finished an excellent 5th.

The girls team almost gave the club another victory with Vanessa Hogan leading on the first leg for under 13 girl and under 15 Elaine Eadie still leading after the second stage. Natalie Sharp ran with great determination but could not hold off the Victoria Park Glasgow runner Beth Potter. Still, Silver medals was a fine effort.

The Senior men were also medal winners for their 4x4000m event with  the quartet of Paul Arcari, Robert Quinn, Tom Hearle and Conor McNulty, always in the top three and finishing in that place, behind Inverclyde AC and Shettleston Harriers. Again, club officials and supporters greatly encouraged by the form of some of the younger athletes with the B team and C team remarkably, finishing in 5th and 7th places. B team quartet was Grant Higgins, Scott Hawkins, Paul Leck and Calum Morrison and the C team Fraser Williams  James Snodgrass, John McMillan and Stephen McGoldrick.

The Boys teams just missed out of the medal positions, the trio of Russell Mountford, Thomas McDonald and Callum Hawkins finishing 4th but only 150 metres behind the winners Ayr Seaforth AC.

This coming Sunday 21 October 2007, the Renfrewshire County Cross Country Relay Championships are being staged at Lochinch, Pollok Park first race 11.45am .

Report by Arthur Smith ....

It was another fine performance from Jessica Martin at the British Junior Home International Hill Race Championships at Abergavenny in Wales at the weekend. Competing in the under 18 age group, finished 3rd and first Scot over the difficult terrain. which included a 1000m climb.

Jessica from Neilston and a member of Kilbarchan Athletic Club is becoming a bit of a hill running specialist shows extra prowess on the uphill sections and was actually in the lead at the top of the climb. Her time of 32 minutes 10 seconds and she was only 17 seconds behind the Welsh winner at the finish. Clubmate Christina Rankin also had a fine run to finish in 9th place in 34.47 and the times indicate the toughness of the course.

Janice Moore

3hr 33mins 40secs

Well done to Janice Moore who ran 3:33:40 at Chicago in temperatures soaring  into the high nineties the hottest on record. Seemingly they were stopping the runners who had not reached halfway before the 2 hour mark for safety reasons after a death and numerous cases of heat exhaustion. Janice was disappointed with her time hoping for around 3:15 but had the sense to realise early on that this was a no go.
