Press Releases - Monday 3 August 2009

Callum Hawkins continued his recent outstanding form at Carmarthen in Wales last weekend, when he won the 3000 metres race, setting a new Celtic Games record of 8 minutes 40.31 seconds. Callum, who just 10 days before, had won the European Youth Olympics 3000metres race in Finland, can now look forward with confidence, to the Scottish Championships on Sunday at Grangemouth.

Also in the Scottish team at Carmarthen, were Andrew McLaughlan, Hazel Ross and Connor Henderson. Andrew just missed his own Kilbarchan under 17s club record for the Shot, finishing 2nd with a fine effort measured at 15.53 metres. Hazel was 3rd in the 80metres Hurdles in 12.03 seconds, just outside her best, and Connor was 4th in the 100m Hurdles, time of 14.4 seconds being a personal best. These athletes, along with several others, will also be looking to do well at Grangemouth on Sunday.

Also last weekend, Hayley Haining, after some recent injury problems, had a successful outing at the British Gas Edinburgh 10K Road race where she won the Womens event in 34 minutes 29 seconds.

Last Sunday was also the final meeting of the season for the Central and South of Scotland League Division One at Wishaw where Kilbarchan Athletic Club finished in 4th place with a number of good performances in the windy conditions.

For the Senior Women, Elspeth Curran won the 800m (2.20.5),  Debbie Henderson the 400m Hurdles (67.7s) and Judith McNicol the Triple Jump (9.45m). Frances Campbell won the under 15 girls 100m (13.4s) and in the 4x100m relays, the under 15 girls team and the Senior Women's team were both winners.

Jack Lochans won the under 17 mens High Jump with a Personal Best of 1.84m and also won the Long Jump (5.34m). Also for the under 17 men, James Quinn won the 100m (12.2s) and David Kerr the 400m (52.3s) while Adrian Mendez-McVeigh won the under 15 boys 400m (54.1s) and Stuart Cannell was a winner in the under 13 boys 100m (14.5s). Both the under 13 boys and the under 17 men's 4x100m relay teams were also victorious.

At last week’s Open Graded Meeting at Linwood, notable Kilbarchan performances included

Alison Rodger’s 14.65m in the Shot, Andy Dawkins also in the Shot, 15.72m, Connor McNulty’s 8 minutes 20.16 seconds for the 3000m and 16 year old David Harper’s 5.90m Long Jump.

Elsewhere, Paul Arcari travelled to the Isle of Islay, where he won the Ardbeg ½ marathon

in 73 minutes 49 seconds.
