| Kilbarchan Athletic Club had athletes competing in various parts of the UK at the weekend in competitions as diverse as Track and Field and ultra distance cross country.
A number represented Team Glasgow in the National Junior League meeting at Liverpool though the best club performance was by Holly Belch, competing for Sale Manchester. Holly was 2nd in the 400metres Hurdles in a good early season 66.59 seconds and was also 2nd in the B 400metres in 60.9 seconds. For Team Glasgow, Connor Henderson ran a useful 58.10s to win the B 400m Hurdles and also ran a useful 52.77 s for the 400m flat while Stephen Fleming won the 3000m B race.
The club also had a big squad competing in the first meeting of the Central and South of Scotland League at Grangemouth. Not much detail yet from this meeting but there were a number of winners including, in the Senior category, Andy Dawkins won the Shot, while Craig Stewart and Martin Lipton won the A and B 400m races by a distance. Sally Webster won the Senior Womens Shot and Hazel Ross won the High Jump and then Sally and Hazel were joined by Emma Pettigrew and Debbie Henderson for an impressive win in the 4x100m relay. In the younger age groups, Vanessa Hogan was a good winner of the under 15 girls 800m.
Going to the other extreme from Track and Field to ultra distance, Kilbarchan had athletes competing in the Highland Fling race which is over the first part of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Tyndrum, a distance of 53 miles over very tough country. The club had 6 runners with first 3 to count for the team race. The runners set off with dawn just about to break and after a long arduous day, first club athlete to finish was Thomas Loehndorf in an excellent 7th place, time 8 hours 20 minutes 40 seconds with Neal Gibson home in 9.24.57 and John Kynaston 9.49.11 second and third club counters winning Kilbarchan second team prize. Chris McGlennon and Neil Fowler also completed the gruelling race and Club ladies were also represented with Caroline Gibson timed at 14.08.49.
The London Marathon on Sunday had its usual vast entry with many local runners taking part on what turned out to be a very warm day. Special mention to Robin Scott from Bridge of Weir who was 4th in the over 65s category in the superb time of 3 hours 14 minutes 6 seconds.
The Scottish Primary Schools Cross Country Championships were staged at Kircaldy on Saturday with stars of the future on display. Because of the huge numbers taking part, the races are split with schools alphabetically. The Gillham twins for Bridge of Weir Primary School were well to the fore with Euan a superb 3rd in his P7 boys race and Gwen Gillhan giving a terrific effort to finish 4th in her race, In the same race, a fine run from Katie Turnbull 9th leading her Hutchesons team to victory and in the other P7 girls race, an excellent run from Chloe Hardie (St Columbas School) to finish in 7th place.
