| Kilbarchan Athletic Club Mens team retained the Marshall Trophy when they won the Renfrewshire Cross Country Relay title at Linwood last Saturday. Very wet and boggy underfoot conditions made for a tough course but the Kilbarchan quartet of Paul Leck, Robert Quinn, Scott Hawkins and Conor McNulty, were only challenged by the club’s B team of Callum Hawkins, Stephen Fleming, Donald Petrie and John McMillan who came home clear in second place. Conor and Callum were joint fastest, timed at 10 minutes 54 seconds for the 3.4K distance with Robert Quinn fastest veteran at 11.06.
The Kilbarchan Ladies team of Louise Manson, Lynsey Curran and Leanne Hamilton also dominated, winning by a distance, with Leanne having the fastest lap of the day, timed at 13.18. Bellahouston Road Runners were second and Glenpark Harriers 3rd.
In the younger age groups, there was some good competition. Inverclyde AC won the under 17 girls event ahead of the Kilbarchan trio of Samantha Kelly, Debbie Henderson and Charlotte Walker but Kilbarchan was successful in the under 15 races, winning both boys and girls events. It was a 1-2 in the under 15 girls with the A team of Elaine Eadie, Kate Gillies and Jenny Eadie wining easily in the end after an early challenge from their own B team. Vanessa Hogan put the B team just ahead after which Katie McAlpine and Emma Haddock had to work hard to keep second place ahead of Inverclyde. The under 15 boys trio of Russell Mountford, Callum Macleod and Matt Wild, were too strong for the opposition and won easily.
The Kilbarchan under 13 boys dominated their race with the A team of Callum Matthews, Christopher McStay and Euan Gillham winning after a early battle with the B team of Nicholas Love, Gregor Wylie and Thomas Collins, who were a good second. For the under 13 girls, Inverclyde just edged out the Kilbarchan trio of Gwen Gillham, Laura McEwan and Siobhan Young.
Kilbarchan under 11 boys team of Kyle Rodger, David Collins and Scott McLardie were 2nd to Inverclyde in a competitive race while the under 11 girls just missed medal positions, finishing 4th and 5th, the A team being Caitlin McStay, Mhari Rundell and Alice Drennan and the B team Kerry McAngus, Kathryn Quinn and Bethany Allan.
This coming Saturday, the National Cross Country Relays are being staged at Cumbernauld with Kilbarchan hoping to be in medal contention in the Men's and Women's races as well as defending the Young Athletes boys title they won last year.
