Around 700 youngsters from local schools, descended on Linwood on Wednesday, to take part in the Renfrewshire District Schools Road Race Championships and most schools in the District were represented. The weather was kind and it was a colourful spectacle highlighted by the enthusiasm of everyone.

 

            The secondary schools competition was in the morning starting with the S1 boys race and Euan Gillham from Gryffe High School, led almost from the start, to win in a time of 5 minutes 41 seconds from Daniel Kelly (St Andrews) with Andrew Irvine (Gryffe) in third place. Gryffe HS won the team race with St Andrews 2nd and Gleniffer HS 3rd. In the S1 Girls race, it was Gwen Gillham from Gryffe HS who dominated to win in 6.30, from Catherine McLean (Trinity HS) with Emma Arnold (Park Mains HS) 3rd. Gryffe HS again won the team competition from CastleheadHS 2nd and St Andrews 3rd.

 

            Callum Matthews (Castlehead HS) won the S2 boys race in 7.11, from Gavin McArdle (Gleniffer HS) with David Ramsey (Castlehead), 3rd. Castlehead HS won the team race with Gleniffer HS 2nd and St Andrews 3rd.  In the S2 girls race, Gryffe HS were back to winning ways with Erin Campbell finishing in top spot, time 6.35, followed home by team mates Meagan McDonald and Emma Wengel for another team success, with Johnstone HS 2nd and St Andrews 3rd.

 

            Park Mains HS dominated the S3 boys race with Paul Kane the winner in 9.25 and Matthew Evans 3rd, with Jack McIlvaney (Castlehead) splitting them in 2nd place. Park Mains easily won the team race with Johnstone HS 2nd and Castlehead HS 3rd. Laura McEwan (St Andrews) was a clear winner of the S3 girls race, time 8.34, with Cleo Jackson and Nicole Drysdale  (both Gryffe) 2nd and 3rd and Gryffe HS won another team title with Gleniffer HS 2nd.

 

            The fun really started in the afternoon with 24 Primary schools entered and well over 100 competitors in each race. Rebecca Craig (Bridge of Weir PS) won the P6 girls race in 6.36, from Heather Fawcett (Lochwinnoch) 2nd and Rona Tytler (Bridge of Weir)  3rd. Bridge of Weir won the team event with Houston PS 2nd and Wallace PS 3rd. Calum Findlay (Ralston PS) won the P6 boys race in 6.24, Ryan Nesbit (St Peters) was 2nd and Jonathan Hillcoat (Houston) was 3rd. Houston PS won the team race from Bridge of Weir and St Peters were 3rd.

            The P7 girls race was won by Robyn Connolly (St Catherines) in 6.57, Melissa McDonald (Auchenlodment) was 2nd and Keren Thomson (St Peters) was 3rd. West PS won the team event from Houston PS with Wallace PS 3rd. The final event of an exciting day resulted in a good win for Scott McLardie (St Peters) in 5.55 with Calum Taylor (Houston) 2nd and Conor Toole (Bridge of Weir) in 3rd place and Houston PS won the team race from Wallace PS with Brediland PS 3rd.

 

            Congratulations to all who took part and the enthusiasm of the youngster and all the supporting spectators suggests that maybe we need to have more events like this .
