| Kilbarchan Athletic Club athletes performed well at the Renfrewshire County annual Cross Country Relay Championships at Pollok Estate last weekend, winning both the Men’s and Women’s races and several other younger athletes medals.
The historic county of Renfrewshire covers a large area, including the current districts of Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, as well as parts of south west Glasgow.
Despite missing some top athletes, the Kilbarchan top men’s team surpassed themselves, leading from the start through David McCormack and the lead kept by Fraser Williams and Alistair MacAngus with a strong finish from John McMillan to ensure victory and retention of the Marshall Trophy.
The Kilbarchan Women's team also surpassed expectations, led off by Leanne Hamilton and maintained by Michelle Bell before Natalie Sharp came home for a clear victory. Leanne ran the fastest lap, 11 minutes 28 seconds.
In the younger girls, races, Kilbarchan won the under 15 girls with a team of Jenny Eadie, Laura McEwan and Erin Campbell, with Jenny running the fastest lap, 6.29 and they were 2nd behind Giffnock North in the under 17 girls race with Elaine Eadie, Emma Haddock and Melissa McStay.
The under 13 girls were 2nd with their B team third, the teams respectively being Gwen Gillham, Caitlin McStay, Chloe Hardie and Emma Arnold, Kathryn Lee and Catherine McLean while the under 11 girls were 2nd with Rebecca Craig, Stephanie McStay and Robyn Connolly with their B team of Heather Fawcett, Kerry McAngus and Rona Tytler just missing the medals in 4th place.
The boys under 13s team of Scott McLardie, Euan Gillham and Gavin McArdle were clear winners with Gavin’s time of 5.57 the fastest lap. The B team of David Collins, Lewis MacDonald and Alan Sharp were 6th. The under15 boys team of Chris McStay, Russell Mountford and Callum Matthews were 2nd behind Inverclyde and Russell had the equal fastest lap of 5.34. The B team of Thomas Collins, Fraser Warwick and Pierce Hart, were 5th. Inverclyde also won the under 11s race with the Kilbarchan team of Andrew Maclean, Robert Mallinder and Ross Findlay in 3rd place and the B team of Lewis Paterson, Jason Cook and David Houston 5th.
