There was a good turnout for Kilbarchan Athletic Club’s 5mile Handicap Chase for the Sustrans Trophy last week. The race starts on the Torr Road viaduct in Bridge of Weir, going out towards Kilmacolm and back.

 

            First runner off on handicap was Max McFarlane, followed 2 minutes later by Annette Fitzpatrick and gradually a stream of runners set off in pursuit with the back markers James Snodgrass and Chris Devenney.

            Annette had caught Max by the turn and Marie Phillips was also closing fast while further back,

Robert Allison and Jim Ogilvie were going well.

 

            In the end, it came down to a sprint finish over the last 100metres with Marie just getting the better on Annette. Wanda Phillips was a good third with Robert Allison 4th, Richard Beall 5th

and Chris McGlennon 6th.

 

            Fastest times were James Snodgrass 27 minutes 29 secs, Chris Devenney 29.11,

Stevie Hards 31.05 with fastest lady Lucy Colman 39.30.

 

There were some outstanding performances by local young athletes at the

Scottish Schools Track and Field Championships at Grangemouth at the weekend.

 

            In the Group A class for over 17 girls, Sally Webster (Paisley GS) surpassed her expectations by winning 2 Gold Medals, the Shot (8.94m) and the Discus (28.13m) as well as breaking her own Kilbarchan under 20s club record for the Hammer with a throw of 33.30m, which gave her 3rd place. In the same age group,

Debbie Henderson (Johnstone HS), in her first ever 400m Hurdles race, won Gold in an impressive 67.13s. Also for Group A girls, Judith McNicol (Gryffe HS) won the 100m Hurdles (18.61s) and was third in the Triple Jump (10.09m). For the boys Group A, Connor Henderson (Gryffe HS), retained his 400m Hurdles title

and Trophy in a speedy 56.52s.

 

            Gold medals were also won by Andrew McLaughlin (Kilwinning Academy), in the Group B (15-17yrs) Shot with a fine 14.81m and Andrew was also 2nd in the Hammer with a Kilbarchan club record of 51.58m. There was Gold and special Trophy award for Hazel Ross (Park Mains HS), in the group B girls 80m Hurdles, time 11.99s and Hazel also won Silver in the 300m Hurdles (46.66s).

 

            Adrian Mendez-McVeigh (Gryffe HS), won 2 Silver medals in the Group C 14-15yrs) category, for the 400m in 54.08s and the 800m in 2 minutes 9.43sec and there were also Silvers for Natalie Sharp (Hutchesons GS) in the Group A (over 17s) 1500m (4.39.50) and for Graham Evans (Garnock Academy), in the Group B 1500m Steeplechase (4.39.64) .

 

            Also winning Silver medals in Group C (14-15 yrs), Sarah Glenny (Gourock HS),  in the 200m (27.-07s). Kate Gillies (Park Mains HS) in the 800m (2.22.52) and Corinne Brooks (Paisley GS) in the High Jump (1.50m).

 

Congratulations to Alison Rodger, winning her first Senior GB vest, selected for GB and NI team for the Shot st the European Team Champs in Portugal this coming weekend.

 

            Claire Gibson continued her recent outstanding form at the British Milers Club meeting at Watford last weekend running a time of 2minutes 2.21 seconds for the 800m, another club record and ever closer to the Commonwealth Games qualifying time. At the same meeting there was a superb run by Derek Hawkins, clocking 14.27.87, one of the fastest ever 5000m by a club athlete. 

 

This weekend, the Scottish Championships are at Pitreavie and Claire will be leading the Kilbarchan contingent in their quest for medals.

 

            On the roads, Paul Arcari continued his recent improved form, winning the Isle of Hoy ½ marathon in 74 minutes 33 seconds. Michael Finlay was 2nd in the Lochwinnoch 6 mile Road Race and Callum Matthews was a convincing winner of the 4mile Junior Race. There were also local athletes at the Vale of Leven 10K Road Race, at the Pollok Park 5K and at the  Isle of Skye ½ marathon where John McInnes was top over 55 athlete. And in Wales Jessica Martin competed in the Trials for the GB team for the European Mountain Running Championships, where she finished 7th in the Junior race
