Press Releases - Monday 12th April 2010

Past President Jim McMillan won the prestigious David Cummings Trophy 7mile Road Race Handicap Chase last Sunday. The race was over the traditional figure of eight course over the hilly roads round the back of Kilbarchan which is a real test of endurance and resolve, made even tougher by the warm weather.

The Trophy was presented to the club by founder member David Cummings who had won a team Bronze Medal at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. This was the 43rd running of the event and Jim, the oldest and most experienced runner in the starting line up, had never won it before.

Starting at the Park gates, first off in handicap was Gardner Masson followed 2 minutes later by Wanda Phillips with Jim McMillan 5th to go, Further back last years runner up Leanne Hamilton was looking to go one better this year and last three off were Donald Petrie, Garry Rankin and finally, back marker James Snodgrass.

In the early stages, Gordon Gallacher was moving well and Garry Rankin looking strong going up the Dampton Brae. Past the crossroads and Jim McMillan had passed Joe Woods and Robert Connell. At Clochoderick Stone,Jim Ogilvie, Andrew Clugston and Chris McGlennon were having a battle, Leanne Hamilton was catching Stevie Hards and Donald Petrie was suddenly closing on Garry Rankin and looking like a contender.

Turning up the Crossflats hill. Jim McMillan had moved into the lead with backmarker James Snodgrass making a big effort to get into contention. Gordon Gallacher was still going well but others were struggling in the heat and up past Meikle Burntshields Farm and through the big dipper it was beginning to look like Jim’s race.

Turning at Lawmarnock Farm, he was still maintaining a good pace with the chasers having a lot to do. Into the village, round by the Cross and up the finish at the Park gates, it was Jim McMillan’s race. Donald Petrie just got passed Gordon Gallacher to get 2nd place with James Snodgrass 4th and Leanne Hamilton first lady in 5th place.

Fastest scratch times were James Snodgrass 40 minutes 56 seconds, Donald Petrie 42.27 and Leanne Hamilton 44.40.

The World Universities Cross Country Championships were staged in Canada, at Kingston, Ontario, at the weekend, with Kilbarchan harrier Derek Hawkins, part of the Great Britain team.

Derek, who attends Glasgow University, celebrated his selection for the Great Britain team, with a fine run finishing in 23rd place, time 31 minutes 28.9 seconds for the 10K circuit. He was 4th Brit and came away with a treasured Bronze team medal ..
