Elspeth Curran had her first International victory in Ireland at the weekend, representing Scotland at the 41st running of the ras na h’Eireean Cross Country Race at the site of the Battle of the Boyne at Drogheda. Fourth the previous week at the Scottish Championships at Falkirk, Elspeth led all the way over the 5K course to beat fellow Scot Rosie Smith, who had beaten her for a podium place at Falkirk.

 

            The Hawkins brothers Derek and Callum, also represented Scotland at Drogheda with impressive performances over the 6K trail. Derek, 3rd at Falkirk, was in contention all the way, in the end just losing out to his American and Polish rivals finishing third again while Scottish under 20s Champion Callum, finished strongly for a fine 5th place.

 

            Back home, Kilbarchan Athletic Club staged their Cross Country Championships round a snow covered circuit in Milliken Estate.

 

            James Snodgrass won the 80 year old Challenge Cup, making it three in a row and altogether his 7th win. James covering the 3 laps of 2 miles in 37 minutes 4 seconds, with Donald Petrie 2nd and Stevie Hards 3rd. Christina Rankin won the Womens 4mile race in 26.51, with Wanda Phillips 2nd.

 

            Garry Rankin won the under 17 boys race in 23.37 ahead of Calum Macleod and Callum Matthews won the under 15 boys event, time 19.59. Elaine Eadie was the winner of the under 17 women in 21.40 and Kirsty Harper was the under 15 girls winner in 13.30.

 

            The Gillham twins were impressive in the under 13 races, Scottish Champion Euan winning in 11.48 ahead of Gavin McArdle and David Collins while West Champion Gwen won the girls race in 13.26 with Caitlin McStay and Kathryn Lee 2nd and 3rd. Robyn Connolly won the under 11 girls race in 7.50, just 25 metres ahead of Rebecca Craig, with Rona Tytler 3rd while Andrew MacAngus won the under 11 boys race in 8.11.

            The club is grateful to Mr and Mrs McIntyre and to farmer Ian Craig for giving permission to round their Championships round the traditional area.
