| Around 1000 runners took part in the various cross country races in Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park last Saturday, the main events being the International races which attracted the world’s top cross country athletes. The Scottish Interdistrict Championships Senior championships are run in conjunction with the International events and give local athletes the opportunity of competing against the world’s best. Kilbarchan Athletic Club was represented in all events and there were some fine performances in the wintry conditions.
The Men's 9K race had a surprise winner in Joseph Ebuya from Kenya in 28 mins 41 secs with Ethiopian World Champion Kenenisa Bekele 4th.. Derek Hawkins, representing the Scottish Universities, was 18th in 31.37. In the 4K mens race, Callum Hawkins finished in 11th place in 14.18, again against top opposition.
Tirunesh Dibaba from Ethiopia was the favourite for the Women's 6K race in 21 37 with Elspeth Curran representing Scottish Universities 16th in 23.55, Cara Sloss representing the West District 33rd in 25.53 and Christina Rankin (Scottish Universities) 43rd in 26.32
Kilbarchan was well represented in the West teams for the younger age groups Inter District competition with no fewer than 13 selected.
Top performances came in the under 13 boys race with Euan Gillham 2nd, Gavin McArdle 3rd and Scott McLardie 19th, helping West District win the team title. The under 13s girls team also won the team event with a fine run from Gwen Gillham to take 3rd place and Katie Turnbull 19th and Caitlin McStay 21st, also doing well. In the under 15 boys race, Russell Mountford ran well for 5th place with Callum Matthews16th and in the girls event, Jenny Eadie was 12th and Kirsty Harper 16th. In the under 17 age group races, Nynke Mulholland and Elaine Eadie were 14th and 22nd for the girls and Graham Evans 15th for the boys ..
